The Evil Dead re-released in UK cinemas for Halloween – news

Park Circus is re-releasing Sam Raimi‘s original The Evil Dead on the big screen at selected cinemas across the UK this Halloween, in partnership with Sony Pictures Releasing.

“Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. Raimi’s seminal horror made a cult icon of Bruce Campbell and turned its director into hot property. Much imitated, The Evil Dead was the birth of an independently-spirited, viscerally-minded new wave in low budget horror cinema.”

The Evil Dead (1981) will be screening at selected cinemas from 31 October across the UK, including Cineworld, BFI Southbank, Tyneside Cinema, Home Manchester and in selected international territories: details here

With the imminent release of David Gordon Green’s hugely anticipated Halloween ‘re-imagining’ on October 19 – which as we all know picks up forty years after John Carpenter’s 1978 classic – the official Michael Myers-themed merchandising has arrived, courtesy of Fright-Rags.

The Shape stalks all over a range of seven T-shirts, hoodies, baseball tees, and women’s shirts. There are also four enamel pins, including a novelty closet door that opens to reveal psycho Michael behind it.

The 2018 movie merchandise is part of Fright-Rags’ much-touted ‘Month of Myers’, which will include apparel from Halloween 1978 (available October 8), Halloween II and Halloween III: Season of the Witch (available October 17), plus Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (available October 24).

Phew! This certainly is the ‘Month of Myers’ merchandising…

Hell Fest – USA, 2018

‘Fun going in. Hell getting out.’

Hell Fest is a 2018 American horror feature film directed by Gregory Plotkin (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension; editor of Get Out and Happy Death Day; et al) from a screenplay by Seth M. Sherwood (Leatherface), Gary Dauberman (The Nun; IT; Annabelle) and Blair Butler. It was produced by Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead; AliensThe Terminator).

The Valhalla Motion Pictures production stars Amy Forsyth (Channel Zero), Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus (Scream), Christian James, Roby Attal, Matt Mercurio (Sleepy Hollow), and genre icon Tony Todd (West of Hell; Final DestinationCandyman; et al).

College student Natalie (Amy Forsyth) is visiting her childhood best friend Brooke (Reign Edwards) and her roommate Taylor (Bex Taylor-Klaus). If it was any other time of year these three and their boyfriends might be heading to a concert or bar, but it is Halloween which means that like everyone else they will be bound for Hell Fest – a sprawling labyrinth of rides, games, and mazes that travels the country and happens to be in town. Every year thousands follow Hell Fest to experience fear at the ghoulish carnival of nightmares.

But for one visitor, Hell Fest is not the attraction – it is a hunting ground. An opportunity to slay in plain view of a gawking audience, too caught up in the terrifyingly fun atmosphere to recognise the horrific reality playing out before their eyes. As the body count and frenzied excitement of the crowds continues to rise, he turns his masked face to Natalie, Brooke, Taylor, and their boyfriends who will fight to survive the night.

Hell Fest is released in American movie houses by CBS Films and Lionsgate on September 28, 2018.

Reviews:

“Because there are no complicated subplots or confusing tangents, because the movie revels in the devilish details of its main Hell Fest attractions first and foremost, we stay inside the park the whole time in a very focused and straight-forward manner. This allows Plotkin to get away with the one-note plotline…” Jake Dee, Arrow in the Head

“The set design is off the charts and features a massive array of unique, colorful, and scary mazes that look as authentic as the one in your town […] The biggest struggle for Hell Fest is the fine line between being fun and violent, which ends up being a constant pull back and forth, just barely keeping its balance.” Brad Miska, Bloody Disgusting

Hell Fest is really good at using the old horror tricks and twists, you know and love. And all the “dumb” tropes are here as well. The masked killer will walk when everyone else is running. But he still catches up to them. However, it was a pleasant surprise that some old tropes were flipped.” Karina Adelgaard, Heaven of Horror

Hell Fest has exactly one genuinely nail-biting scene…. Otherwise, the movie does little to update, subvert, or comment on the trappings of classic thrillers like The Funhouse and Halloween.” Los Angeles Times

“The killings aren’t particularly gripping, there’s little suspense in the earliest ones and the menace is pretty watered down for much of the movie. There are two pretty tight sequences though — one involves a guillotine and an MC played by horror legend Tony Todd (“Candyman”). The other doesn’t.”Roger Moore, Movie Nation

“While the film takes the kids on an operatic journey, with each horror maze more intense than the last, leading up to an intense crescendo of sorts, it lacks a heroic moment. You expect the lead (Amy Forsyth) to be scared and vulnerable, to go through an ordeal, and be awakened as a kick-ass bitch that fights back. However, the film never gets there.” Nerd Bastards

“The scares of “Hell Fest” never leave a mark, and it’s gore-lite in a weird way that makes it seem like a self-serious light-R that forgot to have fun (the relatively tame language and selective gore makes one think it used to have PG-13 aspirations). But the concept has so much potential, it’s a bummer it plays out so mechanically.” Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com

Hell Fest is moderately gory, yet its best deaths (while not particularly memorable) are in the middle, with the climactic Final Girl(s) action a bit flat. When the film should be at its most pulse-pounding, it’s already past its mild peak of tension.” Dennis Harvey, Variety

“Plotkin directed what most consider the worst Paranormal Activity movie Ghost Dimension. His second feature is written by a team of writers in a highly uninspired script. It’s not that Hell Fest is bad, it’s a typical slasher that horror fans will mostly enjoy. We’ve just seen so many versions of it before. Many of which are better.” Without Your Head

Trick or Treats – USA, 1982

‘ …when Halloween night stopped being fun!’

Trick or Treats is a 1982 American horror feature film with a satirical tone written, photographed and directed by Gary Graver (Roots of Evil; Evil Spirits; Moon in Scorpio; and a cinematographer on many productions). The movie stars Jackelyn Giroux, Peter Jason, Chris Graver, David Carradine, Carrie Snodgress and Steve Railsback.

A babysitter is stuck watching over a young brat on Halloween night who keeps playing vicious pranks on her. To add to her trouble the boy’s deranged father Malcolm has escaped from the Western State Hospital asylum and is planning on making a visit…

Reviews:

” …slasher fans who have to see it all – as well as fans of Graver’s output as cinematographer and director – will find this to be a compelling train wreck of a film. As obnoxious as little Christopher is, it’s hard to sympathize with Linda since she continually falls for the kid’s pranks which do not exactly escalate and are not that impressive even at their most elaborate…” Eric Cotenas, DVD Drive-In

” …the “action” concerns Linda and the spoiled brat she has to babysit. For about an hour, we watch as Linda gives trick or treaters candy. Then Christopher plays a dumb practical joke on her. She acts huffy. Rinse, repeat. The movie’s almost over before anything even remotely resembling a slasher movie starts.” Hysteria Lives

” …comparing it to its nearest likeness Halloween, nearly 70 minutes of the running time here is taken up by Jackelyn Giroux settling into the babysitting job and dealing with Chris Graver’s pranks…” Richard Scheib, Moria

” …it captures the spirit of Halloween, however vaguely. It’s rough but obviously affectionate towards exploitation filmmaking, as evidenced by a weird sense of showmanship reflected in both Christopher’s pranks and the bits of the gore film we see unfold on the Moviola.” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!

“Everything about this picture is not only slightly dull, but fairly tame and so much so that it could have been a television movie of the week. The only interesting part of it all was the fact that David Carradine appeared and more than likely only for a paycheck…” The Telltale Mind

” …nothing remotely resembling a threat of violence happens for well over an hour into the 92 minute film. Until then, it’s a never ending cycle of the bratty kid playing a prank on Linda, that she always falls for, and some trick or treaters coming to the door. Again. And again. And again. Until death. Your death. From boredom.” Vegan Voorhees

“The whole thing could’ve played out as a short film and it would’ve worked much better.  Even though Trick or Treats is heavily padded, there are one or two funny asides (like the scene where two women edit a cheesy horror movie and the part when a live newscast is taken over by mental patients) that keep it from completely running out of gas.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

Halloween (2018) soundtrack

The original motion picture soundtrack for the 2018 ‘reinvention’ of Halloween is released on vinyl and CD by Sacred Bones Records on October 19, 2018. The company has also made the whole album available to listen to online (scroll down).

The new Halloween score was composed by John Carpenter, alongside Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies (Carpenter’s collaborators from his last three solo albums).

Sacred Bones is releasing three vinyl versions: standard black vinyl ($19), limited edition orange vinyl ($22), and “art edition” white with orange swirl vinyl ($26). The latter features die-cut alternate artwork by Chris Bilheimer and is limited to 2,000 copies. Various limited edition versions are also being released internationally.

“The new soundtrack pays homage to the classic Halloween score that Carpenter composed and recorded in 1978, when he forever changed the course of horror cinema and synthesizer music with his low-budget masterpiece. Several new versions of the iconic main theme serve as the pulse of Green’s film, its familiar 5/4 refrain stabbing through the soundtrack like the Shape’s knife. The rest of the soundtrack is just as enthralling, incorporating everything from atmospheric synth whooshes to eerie piano-driven pieces to skittering electronic percussion. While the new score was made with a few more resources than Carpenter’s famously shoestring original, its musical spirit was preserved.”

The Nightmare Before Christmas – USA, 1993

$

0

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 American stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy film conceived and produced by Tim Burton (Corpse BrideEd Wood; Mars Attacks!; Sleepy Hollow; Beetlejuice; et al) and directed by Henry Selick. Danny Elfman wrote the songs and score, and provided the singing voice of Jack. The principal voice cast also includes Chris Sarandon, Catherine O’Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page, Paul Reubens, Glenn Shadix and Ed Ivory.

The Nightmare Before Christmas originated in a poem written by Tim Burton in 1982 while he was working as an animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation. With the success of animated short Vincent, Burton began to consider developing The Nightmare Before Christmas. In 1990, he made a development deal and production began in July 1991.

Disney released the film via its adult-orientated Touchstone Pictures banner because they thought the film would be “too dark and scary for kids”, Selick remembered. “Their biggest fear, and why it was kind of a stepchild project, [was] they were afraid of their core audience hating the film and not coming.” To attract a wider audience, it was marketed as Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Plot:

Halloween Town is a fantasy world filled with monsters, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, zombies, demons, mummies, vampires, werewolves, and witches. Jack Skellington, the “Pumpkin King” and leader of the town, leads them in organising the annual Halloween celebrations. However, privately Jack has grown weary of the same routine year after year and wants something new.

Wandering in the woods the morning after Halloween, he stumbles across seven trees containing doors leading to towns representing various holidays, and opens a portal to Christmas Town. Awed by the unfamiliar holiday, Jack returns to Halloween Town to show the residents his findings, but they fail to grasp the idea of Christmas and compare everything to their ideas of Halloween, although they do relate to one Christmas Town character; a red lobster-like king who flies at night named “Sandy Claws”.

Jack sequesters himself in his tower to study Christmas and find a way to rationally explain it, but cannot. He ultimately decides that it’s unfair for Christmas Town alone to enjoy the holiday and announces that he and the citizens of Halloween Town will take over Christmas this year. Thus, Jack assigns the citizens of Halloween Town Christmas-themed jobs.

Jack departs to deliver presents to the world, but the Halloween-styled gifts terrify and attack the populace. As concerns over “Santa’s” behaviour grows, the military takes action and shoots down Jack, causing him to crash in a cemetery. As Jack bemoans the disaster he has made of Christmas, he finds he enjoyed the experience nonetheless, reigniting his love of Halloween.

Jack returns to Halloween Town and finds Oogie’s lair. Oogie tries to kill Jack, but Jack pulls apart the thread holding his cloth form together, revealing a massive pile of bugs that fall into Oogie’s cauldron and are killed. Jack apologises to Santa for his actions, and Santa assures Jack that he can fix things and returns to Christmas Town.

As Santa replaces the Halloween-style presents with genuine ones, the townspeople of Halloween Town celebrate Jack’s return. Santa then visits Halloween Town and brings them a snowfall for the residents to play with. In the graveyard, Jack and Sally declare their love for each other.

Reviews:

” …Nightmare occasionally seems short on story. What it offers instead—morbid whimsy, a winning sweetness, and an abundance of imagination—makes those flaws easy to overlook. Deftly crafted enough to make a skeleton dissecting a teddy bear or the sight of children terrorized by an evil toy duck seem cute, Nightmare taps directly into Burton’s unique sensibility, bringing it to life with highly memorable results.” AV Club

“What a beautifully detailed and beautifully alive world has been created for this film, a film in which every character nuance is perfectly created and every small touch adds to the world of the characters […] The film has clearly been made with love and care…” Flickfeast

“While the over saturation and marketing exploitation surrounding the film may have cheapened the film for some, it really is quite an impressive achievement and judged on its own merits (rather than as the cash cow it seems to have become – just walk into a Hot Topic and take a look around to see for yourself!) the film is still fantastic.” Rock! Shock! Pop!

“One of the many pleasures of Tim Burton’s the Nightmare Before Christmas is that there is not a single recognizable landscape within it. Everything looks strange and haunting. Even Santa Claus would be difficult to recognize without his red-and-white uniform.” Roger Ebert

“It’s kind of like Mad Monster Party, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas all rolled into one.  While the plot may be as thin as Jack is, the film is visually dazzling, fast-paced, and enormously entertaining.” The Video Vacuum

Running time:

76 minutes

Box office:

The film’s reported budget was $18 million. It earned $50 million in the United States on its first theatrical run and a further $8.7 million in box office gross in its 2006 reissue. The 2007 and 2008 reissues earned $14.5 million and $1.1 million, respectively, increasing the film’s total box office gross to $76.2 million.

A Michael Myers officially-licensed, screen-accurate mask based on the iconic one used in the 1978 Halloween movie has been made available from Trick or Treat Studios – the company who also made the Halloween 2018 mask.

The latex mask replica was sculpted by Justin Mabry and is due out in August/September, just in time for Halloween 2019. The pre-order price is $59.99.

It is probably fair to say that this new Trick or Treat Studios mask is better than the ones used in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989).

Boo! – USA, 2018

‘You’ve been chosen’

Boo! is a 2018 American supernatural horror feature film directed by Luke Jaden from a screenplay co-written with Diane Michelle. The movie stars Jaden Piner, Jill Marie Jones, Aurora Perrineau, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Dwight Henry, and Rob Zabrecky. It was produced by Phil Wurtzel of Midland Entertainment and Automatik Entertainment’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones.

Plot:

A torn suburban family refuses to heed the warning of an innocent prank left upon them which causes an unknown supernatural force to wreak havoc…

Review:

Amidst the costumes, candy, decorations and overall commercialisation of Halloween we often forget its dark origins. Origins rooted in the return of the spirits of the dead and rituals to appease them. Those rituals may have changed over the centuries, but they still exist and are to be ignored at your own peril. One family finds this out in Boo! the first feature from Luke Jaden.

Boo! opens with a prologue set in1980 involving a man, a photocopied sheet of paper with a ghost on it and a shotgun. We then jump forward to the present day, when a troubled family gets the same photocopied sheet left on their door. James (Rob Zabrecky), the family patriarch denounces it and Halloween as paganism and burns it, much to the distress of his son Caleb (Jaden Piner), who believes in the Boo! and its powers. Mother Elyse (Jill Marie Jones) and daughter Morgan (Aurora Perrineau) are amused by the whole thing. Amused that is until it quickly becomes apparent that the curse is real and something malevolent has arrived.

Writers Jaden and Diane Michelle lay the family’s problems on so heavy that evil spirits seem like the least of their troubles. Elyse is a chain-smoking alcoholic with a medicine cabinet full of pills. Caleb is withdrawn and draws strange creepy images. James is obsessed with the bible. Morgan has relationship issues and suicidal thoughts. All of which the curse draws on for the apparitions and nightmares it sends them.

Boo! works up some genuinely creepy images and sequences but they’re overwhelmed at times by talky domestic drama. The film spends way too much time showing the characters smoking and bitching at each other. It shows too little of them dealing with whatever is stalking them.

It’s not until the last twenty or so minutes that it builds any sustained tension or suspense It needs a stronger build-up to keep the audience engaged because that last stretch is a wild ride, but some viewers are going to have checked out by then.

Jim Morazzini, guest reviewer via Voices from the Balcony

Other reviews:

“As it is, there’s not a lot happening in Boo!‘s underneath. It compares in structure to the recent Terrified from Argentina, but it fails to maintain a concept for as long or as successfully. It can’t seem to hold an idea in its head beyond that it’s bad when families drift apart and good when they don’t.” Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central

“Despite the amazing atmospherics and acting, the plot does falls apart in the third act, swept away by the visions of ghastly dread the family is subjected to. That is easily forgiven, however, because the vibe is all-engrossing. It’s fun to imagine a 3rd act that pulled together and paid off all the threads, but what we get is still high quality creepy fun.” Bradley Gibson, Film Threat

‘You had your chance to be you. Their turn.’

Shed is a 2019 American supernatural horror feature film written and directed by David Axe (The Theta Girl).

Plot:

Skin-stealing creatures live among humans, masquerading as human … There’s a Halloween party going on nearby, a perfect source of a new identity. Drinks and blood will flow and before the night is over more than one person will turn out to not be who they appeared to be. In more ways than one…

Reviews:

“It’s nonstop brutality at its finest, highlighted by an independent cast and crew with something to prove. And they proved it well. Shed is dark and disarming and a splatterfest mix of horror and science fiction.” Michael Thirkelsen, Horror Society

Shed does a good job of mixing the plot points we expect from this kind of film with some nice twists. There’s a big cast for a film of this budget and that means plenty of victims […[ We’re barely 15 minutes in and there’s a threesome going on. As with its gore, the film doesn’t shy away from skin either. It also doesn’t always display it the way you might expect.” Jim Morazzini, Voices from the Balcony

Filming locations:

Columbia, South Carolina

Budget:

$25,000

“Universal Monsters” will come to life in all-new terrifying Halloween Horror Nights mazes at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, inspired by Universal’s original cinematic monsters…

At Universal Orlando Resort, guests will be hunted by every single grisly monster from the anthology, including Dracula, The Wolf Man and Frankenstein, in the all-new experience, “Universal Monsters.” Each sinister environment will bleed from one to the next as guests press through the darkened realms of horrifying creatures.

Guests will face bloody terrors in Dracula’s castle and flee from what is behind the cryptic howls of the grim forest. They’ll run from the horrifying manmade monster within Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory, and fall prey to an ancient Egyptian curse as they are pursued by the evil Mummy. Guests will try to escape the mysterious Creature lurking in the Black Lagoon, or become victims of other horrors waiting in the shadows.

On the heels of last year’s successful “Universal Monsters” experience, Universal Studios Hollywood will introduce an all-new horrifying maze, “Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man,” that delves deeper into the Universal Monsters’ lore. Loosely based on Universal’s 1943 horror movie of the same name, this reimagined tale for the 21st century takes guests on a terrifying journey that bears witness to a deadly confrontation between these two horror icons and the epic battle that rages between them.

Guests will follow in the footsteps of the Frankenstein Monster, lured by exotic music towards a nearby gypsy camp while desperately seeking sanctuary from a mob of angry villagers determined to destroy him. It is within the gypsy encampment that the Frankenstein Monster meets The Wolf Man and where the madness begins as guests are led along a path of destruction through the murky Moors, to a creepy cemetery and into the smoldering ruins of Castle Frankenstein and its icy cellars beneath.

Universal Studios’ “Halloween Horror Nights” is the ultimate Halloween event. For more than 25 years, guests from around the world have visited “Halloween Horror Nights” to become victims inside their own horror film.  Multiple movie-quality mazes based on iconic horror television shows, films and original stories come to life season after season. And, the streets of each park’s event are transformed into highly-themed scare zones where menacing scare-actors lunge from every darkened corner.

“Halloween Horror Nights” begins Friday, September 6 in Orlando and on Friday, September 13 in Hollywood. Additional details about the events will be revealed soon.

A limited time ticket offer and vacation package for Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights is on sale now. For more information about “Halloween Horror Nights” at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort, visit www.HalloweenHorrorNights.com

Candy Corn – film, USA, 2019

Candy Corn is a 2019 American supernatural horror feature film written, co-produced, edited and directed by Josh Hasty (Honeyspider). The movie stars Courtney Gains, Tony Todd, Sky Elobar and Pancho Moler.

Plot:

On Halloween eve, local outcast, Jacob Atkins (Nate Chaney), is carelessly murdered. A vagabond carny named Dr. Death (Pancho Moler), takes matters into his own hands, bringing Jacob back from the dead to creatively seek brutal revenge on his killers…

Release:

Candy Corn has been picked up by Epic Pictures and will be distributed through their Dread imprint. A US Fall theatrical release is planned. Meanwhile, the movie will be trade shown at the Cannes Film Festival to seek international distribution. Here’s what filmmaker Josh Hasty had to say:

“For the last three years of my life Candy Corn has been a labor of love that’s consumed my every waking moment. I had the most incredible team of filmmakers that stood behind my ambitious goals through a very trying and stressful production. When you spend this much time with something you had to consistently keep alive against all odds, the thought of handing it off to a distributor can be horrifying.

I spoke with a lot of interested distributors, but the conversations ended after my first call with the team at Epic Pictures and Dread. They are leaps and bounds ahead of the competition when it comes to their passion and understanding for independent films like Candy Corn. Within ten minutes of our first phone call I felt like I was talking to people who had been a part of our team from day one, and would stop at nothing to get it in front of every Halloween obsessed, blood thirsty, cinema-loving eyeball in the world. I was often asked which distributor I hoped would take Candy Corn. I consistently stood by the notion that I would only sell my film to the distributor I thought would care about it as much as I do. That is the ultimate reason Epic Pictures and Dread are putting out Candy Corn. And I couldn’t be happier.”

Rob Galluzzo, Director of Distribution for Dread:

“If there’s one thing that horror fans have a sweet spot for, it’s Halloween. And Candy Corn delivers what will no doubt become an annual tradition. With a killer all-star cast of genre names, rich mythology, a great looking iconic killer, and cool score, we’re so excited to bring this film to horror fans this Fall!”
