Italian filmmaker Umberto Lenzi has died

Director and writer Umberto Lenzi (6 August 1931 – 19 October 2017) was a genre stalwart for many, many years. Like many Italian directors, Lenzi began his cinema career making whatever audiences craved at the time. In the 1960s, this often meant sword and sandal (peplum), Westerns and spy movies.

In the late ’60s/early ’70s, Lenzi began to create his own niche with erotic thrillers starring Carroll Baker that were hugely popular in Europe: OrgasmoSo Sweet… So Perverse and A Quiet Place to Kill. This move into thrillers led Lenzi into making gialli such as Seven Blood-Stained Orchids; Knife of IceSpasmo and Eyeball.

For better or worse, ever-busy Lenzi also kickstarted the cannibal horror subgenre in 1972 with Il paese del sesso selvaggio (“The Country of Savage Sex”), better known as Man from Deep River. After the huge success of Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust, in 1980, Lenzi returned to the jungle with his own Eaten Alive and the infamous Cannibal Ferox.

Meanwhile, Lenzi’s forays into the zombie subgenre included the trashy Nightmare City (1980 – although he maintained that his creatures were radioactive mutants, not walking dead), and Black Demons. His supernatural movies included Ghosthouse (1988), The House of Witchcraft (1989) and The House of Lost Souls (1989), which we posted a couple of weeks ago.

A fuller appreciation of Umberto Lenzi’s career will appear as a separate entry.

Actor Bill Skarsgard talks about ‘IT: Chapter 2’

Speaking to IGN, actor Bill Skarsgard has shared his thoughts on the highly-anticipated sequel to IT:

“The first movie worked so well at what it is trying to do, I think, and ultimately that is the kids’ story, and you follow these kids and you sort of fall in love with these kids. And the second one will be the adult story. And I think the right way to do it is to make that movie actively different.”

Skarsgard continues:

… I think there might be worth exploring sort of the psychological aspects of horror, but also maybe the sort of cosmological existence of this being. What is he, and where does he come from?”

And on The Ritual of Chud:

“I mean, it’s very abstract. And I kind of like that. It could be almost a sort of [serialized] surrealistic sort of psychedelic trip if you go into the mind of Pennywise. And if you’ve read the novel you know that they do actually go into his mind. Or they go into this transdimensional place, and they sort of beat him in this place. Which might be interesting, what that place would be, and what would it look like. There’s opportunities, I think, and I’m excited for it.”

IT: Chapter 2 is released on September 6th, 2019.

‘The New Mutants’ is set to be a horror trilogy

Director Josh Boone has planned a full trilogy of horror-themed The New Mutants movies with each one exploring a different aspect of the horror movie genre. During an interview with IGN Boone explained:

“We brought it to FOX as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the ‘80s. These are all going to be horror movies, and they’ll all be their own distinct kind of horror movies. This is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie.”

He goes on to explain:

“Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics.”

Deadline also reports that: “Overall, Happy Death Day gets a B CinemaScore, which is outstanding for a horror movie (‘A’s are rare for the genre) and that grade outstrips the CinemaScores for Blumhouse’s Ouija movies (both Cs), Unfriended (C), The Purge (C), and most of the Paranormal Activity canon with the exception of Paranormal Activity 2, which earned a B.”

Globally, Happy Death Day earned $5 million, for an overall weekend take of $31.5 million. Next weekend, the film opens in 16 more movie markets, including Sweden, Taiwan, the UK and Ireland.

Halloween: The Night HE Came Back – Canada, 2016

Halloween: The Night HE Came Back is a 2016 Canadian fan made slasher horror short film written and directed by Dave McRae from a story co-written with Leah Kellar. The latter also stars along with Bruce Dale and Jodi Krangle.

Director Dave McRae says:

“We wanted to create an old school film that displayed the same kind of mood, atmosphere, and tone as the original Halloween (1978) that would also act as a concept piece for the new incarnation of the Halloween franchise.

Instead of creating a fan film similar in tone as the later sequels, with groups of teenagers being killed off with lots of blood and gore, we decided to scale it back and create that claustrophobic, small town, independent, slow moving vibe of the original.

The original Halloween was very small, not just in budget, but in feel and tone. It wasn’t until Halloween II (when the cat was out of the bag) that things really began to open up. This is a very important detail we wanted to capitalize on. In other words, hell is breaking loose down the street, and nobody knows about it. We hope you enjoy our tribute. This one is for the fans!”

A shy and introverted aspiring actress moves to Haddonfield, Illinois, to reconnect with her brother Bob. Unaware of the town’s secrets and her connection to them, a familiar presence engulfs the innocence rebuilt on Halloween night…

Pay the Ghost – USA, 2015

‘Evil walks among us’

Pay the Ghost is a 2015 American supernatural horror film directed by Uli Edel (Evil Never Dies; The Little Vampire; Tales from the Crypt TV series: ‘Came the Dawn’) from a screenplay by Dan Kay (Timber Falls), based on a novella by Tim Lebbon. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Veronica Ferres, Lauren Beatty, Jack Fulton, and Elizabeth Jeanne le Roux.

A professor, Mike Lawford (Nicolas Cage) frantically searches for his son Charlie (Jack Fulton) who was abducted during a Halloween parade.

As nearly a year goes by, the parents are still looking for their son and starting to hear and see their son reaching out to them from the other world—the Professor sees his son on a passing bus, but upon chasing the bus down and gaining access, his son is not there.

He disembarks and notices spray painted on a building, “pay the ghost,” the phrase his son uttered before vanishing. He enters the building and finds homeless people living there.

Unearthly screams of a woman are heard, and a blind homeless man calls for the others to mask their fires, explaining to Mike that the screams are heard every year before Halloween…

Reviews:

Pay the Ghost doesn’t break any new ground, and neither does it try to as it emulates a well rehearsed ghost story and a visual style seen in much of mainstream horror but with a decent script and some good performances from its cast, this film relies on its own merits to be an enjoyable journey.” Bloodguts UK Horror

” …too much of Pay The Ghost (up to and including a nonsensical mid-credits faux-shocker) consists of its characters flailing through the motions of supernatural encounters. The movie stays on the amusing side of lousy but never crosses over into good.” Jesse Hassenger, A.V. Club

“The film abuses jump scares and has a few CGI effects that don’t really manage to fully convincing, and even if the story ends up being a bit predictable as it ends up explaining the roots of the horror, the ghost and the disappearing kids, we are treated to some surprising imagery.” Jaime Grijalba Gomez, Screen Anarchy

” …Cage commits more to the performance than he normally does, working to make Mike’s ordeal psychologically punishing and physically exhausting. While the role isn’t a stretch, it works, emerging as the effort’s best chance to connect with the audience. The rest of Pay the Ghost doesn’t carry the same enthusiasm.” Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com

” …a solemn Nicolas Cage searches across fantastical realms for his missing son with all the urgency of a morning run to Starbucks. Hardly anyone here, from cast to director to the below-the-line craftsmen, appears to have put in more than the bare minimum of professional effort, and the lack of enthusiasm proves contagious.” Andrew Barker, Variety

“There are cheap jump scares sprinkled throughout the story to remind you this is supposed to be a horror film, but honestly they just get in the way. I was more intrigued by the mystery of the boy’s disappearance and was enjoying the well made creepy atmosphere the movie craftily presented. There are even some extremely violent and terrifying bits that are unexpected but welcome.” April Bennett, Wicked Horror

” …it really isn’t that bad. Apparently, Edel discovered the magic word that convinced Cage to turn down the mania. Maybe it was “IRS.” Regardless, he indulges in minimal nostril-flaring throughout what is arguably his most restrained performance in years.” Joe Bendel, J.B. Spins

“Unconvincing in premise or setting (the couple’s gloomily cavernous home suggests that teaching salaries have soared since I was in academia), Dan Kay’s filament-thin story, accessorized with flapping vultures and disturbing graffiti, relies entirely on Mr. Cage’s desperate-dad energy. Sludgy greens and smudged blacks assault the eyes, and crashing sound cues accompany every scare…” Jeanette Catsoulis, The New York Times

“A Halloween movie starring Nicolas Cage should be an insanely fun romp that entertains from start to finish. Sadly, Pay the Ghost is a chore to sit through and rarely makes good use of its holiday setting. The film takes itself far too seriously and avoids being even remotely fun in the process.” Blair Hoyle, Cinema Slasher

” …we get a watered down Nicolas Cage behind a pair of scholarly glasses and going crazy rather than the action movie Nic tearing his shirt off in inchoate rage as he settles things with his fists. Not to say that Uli Edel doesn’t give us moments that have a mild eeriness – a child’s scooter moving through the apartment of its own accord, flickers of tablets and camcorders coming to life…” Richard Scheib, Moria

“There are some over-the-top deaths reminiscent of The Omen, but for the most part, it’s about how the loss of a child tears a parent’s world apart.  Initially, I thought this was going to be kind of like a horror version of Stolen. However, it has a decent mythology surrounding its mysterious specter and Edel delivers an occasional creepy moment.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

” …Cage plays 90% of Pay the Ghost straight, which is a shame because his off-the-wall antics and expressionistic meltdowns would have definitely mitigated extreme boredom and lazy writing into something possibly worth remembering for laughs.” Robert Kojder, Flickering Myth

Cast and characters:

  • Nicolas Cage as Mike Lawford – Mom and Dad; Season of the Witch; Ghost Rider and sequel; The Wicker Man
  • Sarah Wayne Callies as Kristen
  • Lauren Beatty as Annie Sawquin
  • Jack Fulton as Charlie

Halloween Pussy Trap Kill! Kill! is a 2017 American horror film directed by Jared Cohn (The Domicile; Devil’s Domain; Little Dead Rotting Hood; 12/12/12). The Cleopatra Entertainment production stars Sara Malakul Lane, Richard Grieco, and Demetrius Stear.

On Halloween, an all-girl rock band called Kill Pussy Kill ventures out to play their biggest show to date. However, before hitting the road they manage to unwittingly upset a man in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, this man turns out to be an evil genius dead set on revenge.

The evil genius manages to lure the girls into his Hell House, and when they wake up from being gassed, they find themselves trapped inside an escape-proof room filled with a vicious variety of devices that can kill them as well as a variety of weapons that can be used on each other.

The rules are simple: advance through all three rooms and you are allowed to go free. The catch is, in order to make it to the next room, someone must die…

Reviews:

“It wallows in the gore, all of it designed to be as stomach-churning as possible, even as none of it is (purposefully) realistic. And it does all this with a campy smirk, foregoing standards such as the Final Girl trope in favor of shock and awe. This is creepy slasher-esque fodder made in homage to 70s drive-in B-movie horror…” David Duprey, That Moment In

Halloween Pussy Trap Kill Kill isn’t amusing, it’s punishment, with Cohn missing the art of performance by encouraging his cast to scream and cry for most of the run time, which immediately wears out its welcome. The constant infighting tends to take the sting out of any possible suspense.” Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com

“Mustaine’s embarrassingly weak bid to channel Tobin Bell is, sadly, not nearly as grating as a genuinely offensive Islamabad-set prologue featuring ISIS-like executions and the reduction of a complex contemporary issue to a cheap plot device. There’s no one to root for, with personality-vacuum final girl Sara Malakul Lane doing her resilient heroine shtick with both boobs hanging out of her ripped top…” Steven West, Horrorscreams Videovault

“The military angle exists solely so they can exploit the shock of a soldier getting his head cut off by a terrorist. It’s cheap and unnecessary and it’s the only time when Halloween Pussy Trap Kill Kill actually seems to have any ounce of courage in its exploitation violence. The rest of the movie is remarkably tame by comparison…” Sean Patrick, Horror Media

“None of the band members has much personality, not even their leader, Amber Stardust, played by Sara Malakul Lane […] Yeah, not good. This a brutal but derivative film that has no reason for being, except to sell a soundtrack album. Not recommended under any circumstances…” Joe Bendel, J.B. Spins

” …it requires some grindhouse sensibilities, a strong stomach to make it through the bloodier stuff, and a portion of humour to properly appreciate the over-the-topness of some elements of the film (including the girls campy outfits) – but if your tastes are similar to mine and you don’t have problems with any of that, you’ll in all probability utterly enjoy this film, a fast-paced genre piece…” Mike Haberfelner, Search My Trash

“The main thing that will make this film memorable is its use of neon costumes which fit with the exploitation aesthetic. There’s also some decent music of the sort you’d expect, which goes some way to generating a sense of energy. In the end, though, it all falls a bit flat, with nothing to offer but twists we’ve seen a dozen times before.” Jennie Kermode, Eye for Film

The dialogue is fun, with some moments of cattiness from the girls, Mustaine’s growls as the villain, and Grieco as the creepy mechanic. The maniac’s wife is a small role, but the actress really makes the most of her scenes and has some fun lines to rattle off. So between the colorful characters and offbeat moments, the writing hits some fun notes and earns a few points.” Marc Fusion

“It seems like Jared basically went to escape rooms around L.A. and binged Saw in the same weekend. Halloween (2018) soundtrack release – news

$

0

The original motion picture soundtrack for the 2018 ‘reinvention’ of Halloween will be released on vinyl and CD by Sacred Bones Records on October 19, 2018. The new score is composed by John Carpenter, alongside Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies (Carpenter’s collaborators from his last three solo albums).

Sacred Bones is releasing three vinyl versions: standard black vinyl ($19), limited edition orange vinyl ($22), and “art edition” white with orange swirl vinyl ($26). The latter features die-cut alternate artwork by Chris Bilheimer and is limited to 2,000 copies. Various limited edition versions are also being released internationally.

“The new soundtrack pays homage to the classic Halloween score that Carpenter composed and recorded in 1978, when he forever changed the course of horror cinema and synthesizer music with his low-budget masterpiece. Several new versions of the iconic main theme serve as the pulse of Green’s film, its familiar 5/4 refrain stabbing through the soundtrack like the Shape’s knife. The rest of the soundtrack is just as enthralling, incorporating everything from atmospheric synth whooshes to eerie piano-driven pieces to skittering electronic percussion. While the new score was made with a few more resources than Carpenter’s famously shoestring original, its musical spirit was preserved.”

Meanwhile, Sacred Bones Records has posted a teaser of a teaser:
