‘Always choose treat’

Trick is a 2019 American horror serial killer thriller feature film directed by Patrick Lussier (Into the Dark: Flesh & Blood; My Bloody Valentine 2009; Dracula 2000 and sequels) from a screenplay co-written with Todd Farmer (My Bloody Valentine 2009; The Messengers; Jason X).

The movie stars Omar Epps, Ellen Adair, Tom Atkins (My Bloody Valentine 2009; Night of the Creeps; The Fog 1980) and Jamie Kennedy.

Home viewing release:

Trick will be released on Blu-ray and DVD by RLJE Films on December 17, 2019. Discs include The Making of Trick featuring interviews with the cast and crew.

Plot:

An elusive serial killer descends upon a small town annually and is responsible for gruesome murders year after year, each seemingly unrelated. No-one believes this could be the same killer.

Detective Mike Denver (Omar Epps) has faced Trick once before, having shot and seemingly killed him. Or so everyone keeps telling him. However, Denver knows Trick is still out there, and he’s coming back for revenge…

Reviews [click link to read more]:

” …it has enough bloody action and Halloween spirit that it’s almost certain to be warmly embraced by a legion of horror fans who will be gladly adding it to their annual Halloween season viewing lists. My only true issues with the film started to emerge at the end, as I wasn’t entirely convinced by a certain turn of events…” Arrow in the Head

“With several jump-scares, practical effects, and plenty of nods to the past, Trick blends many of the best elements of Horror, old and new, to forge its own path within the genre. Certainly, a film that is crafted for those that love an antihero—and some gruesomely creative deaths in broad daylight…” Cryptic Rock

“This is Farmer and Lussier invoking all the savagery and snark they can muster to manufacture a good old-fashioned slasher with snappy style. Even though the last act specifically is ludicrously written, the fun this film has translates into a slickly made production that satisfies the job it sets out to do as homage horror.” Culture Crypt

Omar Epps in slasher horror thriller movie Trick (2019)

Trick certainly delivers what slasher fans would want out of a new slice-and-dice affair. But where the film actually superseded all my expectations is when the script, co-written by Lussier and Farmer, takes a very unexpected turn, and you realize that Trick is playing a much grander game than your run-of-the-mill killer on the loose story.” Daily Dead

Trick is violent and unfussily grubby, but it is also lean, mean, and lethally tense.  You might think you can guess the big twist and you might sort of be right, but Lussier and co-screenwriter Todd Farmer call viewers’ bets and raise them substantially. In the process, they open the door for a sequel, but in a way that doesn’t feel like a cheat.” J.B. Spins

“It’s a rare slasher movie with too much going on under the mask, with Kennedy’s presence a clue to the Scream-style underpinnings of the notion of a celebrity urban legend killer – as too many characters blunder to their deaths while sub-plots unfold in which almost everything turns out to be not what it seems … but not especially intriguing either, since too many reveals still don’t come up with much in the way of surprise. ” The Kim Newman Website

“Trick’s lack of motivation and longstanding grudge don’t make any sense so it’s hard to get into the story. The twist is so stupid and an awful payoff for this nearly two hour investment. What’s even more annoying is the hero characters’ complete inability to do anything competent even when they have all the answers.” Lyles Movies Files

“Now, not everything works; the continued onslaught of explicitly violent imagery wore me down fairly quickly, so that aspect of the film had little to no effect upon me, beyond general nausea. Even so, I understand why Lussier decided to go that route, and the film as a whole is very well put-together and fairly well flies by.” Screen Anarchy

” …Trick feels like an Asylum spin on Todd Phillips’s Joker […]But where the licensed DC spinoff is an irresponsible and irredeemable pity party for a creep, this cheap lookalike is just an incompetent, nihilistic exercise in gore and pseudophilosophy, assembled crudely from horror and cop-movie clichés.” Slant

Trick is an insanely paced film, full of bloody killing, including multiple, on-screen, decapitations […] The film mixes more conventional stabbings with booby traps and some elaborately planned set pieces. Lussier and Farmer have created a killer who seems to combine Michael Myers’ boogeyman with the intelligence of Hannibal Lecter.” Voices from the Balcony

Release:

RLJE Films (distributors of Satanic Panic; Mandy; The Cleaning Lady; et al) will release Trick theatrically and on Digital and VOD on October 18th 2019.

Background:

Trick is, for lack of a better term, ‘slasher-noir’ horror set in upstate New York, spanning five consecutive Halloweens where serial killer Trick Weaver taunts police up and down the Hudson River practising murder as performance art,” Lussier explained to Bloody Disgusting.  “The Benton Township, where Trick’s murderous journey begins, has fallen into decay, almost like Trick’s initial killings didn’t just claim individual victims but killed the town itself.”

Lussier’s lengthy list of horror credentials began while working alongside Wes Craven in some of the genre’s biggest hits including the ground-breaking Scream franchise, Red EyeNew Nightmare and Vampire in Brooklyn. Lussier directed and co-wrote My Bloody Valentine and was a writer and producer on Terminator Genisys. He also directed Dracula 2000 and Dracula II: Ascension.

Perhaps most importantly to horror fans, Lussier has promised, “We’ve gone out of our way to make the kills as grounded and practical as possible. Gary J. Tunnicliffe, who has been my partner in murder and mayhem since 2000, has once again returned to craft a festival of ferocity, drenched in bloody steel.”

Writer Todd Farmer has a long history in the horror genre including Jason X and The Messengers and has worked previously alongside Lussier co-writing My Bloody Valentine.

‘Some monsters are real’

Haunt is a 2019 American supernatural horror feature film written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (co-writers of A Quiet Place). Eli Roth (The House with a Clock in Its Walls; The Green Inferno; Hostel) produced.

The movie stars Katie Stevens (Polaroid), Will Brittain (Kong: Skull Island), Lauryn Alisa McClain and Andrew Caldwell (iZombie).

Plot:

On Halloween, a group of friends encounter an “extreme” haunted house that promises to feed on their darkest fears. The night turns deadly as they come to the horrifying realisation that some nightmares are real…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“This is a professionally done picture, so even if there wasn’t much attention paid to the characters, there surely was on the general atmosphere of the thing. A handful of sequences, primarily the ones revolving around the masked maniacs, build a nice sense of foreboding […] Haunt isn’t a bad choice if you’re looking for some disposable Halloween horror; you can certainly do much worse.” Eric Walkuski, Arrow in the Head

“I’ll give it up for good looking photography that initially captures a crisp Fall feeling full of jack-o-lanterns and cool breezes rustling Midwestern leaves. Then the whole thing flattens underfoot in an effort best described as “entry-level horror.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

” …a movie that was so much better than I could have ever dreamt of. Everybody seems to really be having fun with this project in the sense that they want to surprise and give horror fans something to truly enjoy. Well, mission accomplished.” Karina Adelgaard, Heaven of Horror

“Horror films are meant to be fun and scary but they can serve up a few life lessons. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods made a movie that can be watched every year and at Halloween […] This cast did a good job. Katie Stevens played Harper with courage. She took the trauma that her character’s younger self suffered through and turned it into the will to keep fighting.” Janel Spiegel, HNN

” …it captures the spirit of Halloween, spins it on its head and then unleashes those vibes right onto the screen. To be honest, Haunt is one of the better produced Eli Roth movies to come out in recent years and I’m definitely a fan of this title. Haunt is a never-ending nightmare of carnage and heart-stopping moments.” Michael Therkelsen, Horror Society

” …the most basic, down-the-line, you-get-exactly-what-you-paid-for no-frills version of the killer haunt theme, mounted with decent production values, a competent young cast, well-staged shocks and horrors, a modicum of off-the-shelf creepiness appropriate to an environment where clichés would be mandatory.” The Kim Newman Web Site

“If you go into Haunt expecting a fantastic new film from the guys that wrote A Quiet Place you’ll be disappointed. If you go into Haunt expecting a cliched slasher movie set in a haunted house attraction then you might actually enjoy what’s on offer. Just don’t expect the unexpected.” Phil Wheat, Nerdly

“The creepily malevolent grotesques running the show make little sense as characters, but what is more important here is the way that they and their environs come to reflect Harper’s own history and trauma, giving her an opportunity to restage a confrontation of which, as a child, she was not capable.” Anton Bitel, SciFiNow

“The actors aren’t given much character complexity to work with, but neither do they portray stock cannon-fodder types, and all acquit themselves well. The same can be said for Haunt in general: It offers nothing particularly new, yet it fulfills the only requirement that really matters for this kind of movie — it’s scary.” Dennis Harvey, Variety

” …the usual slasher cliches. The group splitting up, trusting people they should know not to trust, etc. It’s not badly done, there are some good scares and the obligatory childhood trauma element is worked in nicely. But it’s all very, very predictable, right down to the final scene.” Jim Morazzini, Voices from the Balcony

Release:

Haunt will be released on DVD by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment on October 15th, 2019. Bizarrely, in this age of HD as standard, a 1080p Blu-ray release has not been announced. Yet.

Special features for the 480p DVD:

  • Audio commentary with writers/directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods
  • Behind the Haunt featurette
  • The Sound of Haunt featurette

Prior to its home video debut, Haunt is released theatrically and on VOD on September 13th by Momentum Pictures.

Background:

Scott Beck told Entertainment Weekly: “The shoot was incredible because, first and foremost, with our production designer, and our art direction team, we were able to build our own haunted house, that had functioning gags.”

He continued: “That was like being in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, getting to roam around these extravagant incredible sets. Beyond that, we got to actually film over Halloween, which led to this incredible camaraderie of everyone just wanting to enjoy the season, and throw all of that fun energy of what Halloween season really is into the movie.”

Cast and characters:

  • Katie Stevens … Harper
  • Will Brittain … Nathan
  • Lauryn Alisa McClain … Bailey
  • Andrew Caldwell … Evan
  • Shazi Raja … Angela
  • Schuyler Helford … Mallory
  • Phillip Johnson Richardson … Ty Hoffman

Scare Attraction – UK, 2019 – overview and reviews

Scare Attraction is a 2019 British horror feature film about reality TV stars being menaced and murdered in an escape room.

Written and directed by Steven M. Smith (Doll Cemetery; The Haunting of Borley Rectory; The Doll Master; et al), the Greenway Entertainment-Rellik Films production stars Tony Fadil (Nightmare on 34th Street; House of Salem), Sonera Angel (Dead Again; The Haunting of Borley Rectory), Primrose Bigwood (Dead Again) and Elliot Cable.

Plot:

‘Love Nest’ reality TV stars Peter and Susie attend a Halloween scare attraction arranged by their manager. When they arrive, Pete and Susie are disappointed to discover the event is run by a group of terrible amateur dramatic actors. After touring the scare attraction they are led into an escape room, where they are locked in.

Suddenly, the escape room turns deadly as gas leaks in leaving them unconscious. When they awake, the reality TV stars find themselves bound and trapped in individual chairs. A voice tells them they must tell a truth or die. Who will survive the real scare attraction?

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Whilst the horror is all but non-existent the film is worth a watch. Take into consideration a 4-day turnaround on a feature film and regardless of what it looks like, that’s no mean feat. Credit where credit is due. Not bad, not bad at all.” Back to the Movies

“There’s a recurrent scene where visitors to the attraction walk into the clown room (filmed in night vision) and are scared by the sight of a greasepainted urchin. This happens again and again to pad out the running time […] If I’d seen this before any of Smith’s other films, well let’s just say that I would never have seen any of his other films. Truly putrid.” Dark Eyes of London

“There’s some flourishes of brilliance in the film, in particular the footage featuring scenes from “other” scare attractions (which pad out this films short running time) […] and the slow-mo scenes of our “contestants” trying to escape the haunted house once they’re free of the escape room. It’s just a shame that the rest of the film can’t live up to those brief slices of genius.” Nerdly

” …a turgid affair full of unlikable characters that you care little about, and hope to spend the minimum amount of time in the company of. It’s a shame, as it’s clear that there’s an artistic eye lying deep with the director’s psyche…” The Schlock Pit

Release:

In the UK, Scare Attraction is released on DVD by 101 Films on 14th October 2019, combined with a digital release on platforms such as SkyStore, VirginMovies and Amazon Prime

Cast and characters:

‘Dance until you drop…dead!’

Spine Chiller is a 2019 American anthology horror feature film with four tales based around an annual Halloween dance.

Written and directed by Jacob Perrett (Creature in the Dark; Weird Fiction) and Taylor Rhoades, the Fame Cinema production stars Derric Hyde, Rose Stainbrook, Taylor Rhoades and Isabella Rodriguez.

Official synopsis:

‘It’s late October. The Spine Chiller is an annual Halloween dance with sinister beginnings. Take a trip with us as we delve into four different stories following four individuals who have been invited to this dance… Who will survive? What is going on at the Spine Chiller?’

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“Working on a limited budget Perrett does well to show us some gore and although sometimes it is aftermath shots, the not-seeing what has happened in this case is quite effective. The set design is excellent and its clear a lot of attention has been paid to make this look and feel like a Halloween themed movie; you can almost smell the pumpkin entrails.” Bloody Flicks

“This Halloween anthology hinges on the Halloween fun instead of gore and it works. We do get a little gore later in the film that looks surprisingly well done and the practical effects are decent considering the film’s budget. Overall, Spine Chiller is the Halloween film you are looking for.” Horror Society

“My main gripe with a lot of anthologies is that you can get a very high-value production short followed directly by a low-quality one. This film is very streamlined, as is the acting and special FX, which are stunning here. The film is packed with amazing stories and solid production, none of which lack quality or substance.” HorrorScreams VideoVault

Due to the quality of the directing, the great soundtrack (featuring a wonderful score from All Season), amazing make-up, decent special effects, and the editing and cinematography – I loved the look of this […] However I found the plot to be a bit hard to follow, I was never really too sure exactly what was going on.” The Rotting Zombie

‘Breaking in was easy… breaking out is going to be hell.’

The Good Things Devils Do is a 2020 American horror feature film about a gangster and a family man forced to join forces to fight a vampire.

Written and directed by Jess Norvisgaard (The Resurrection of Kryst short), the SuttleFilm production stars Linnea Quigley, Kane Hodder, Bill Oberst Jr., Bobby Pimentel, Kelley Wilson Robinson, Mary Katherine O’Donnell and Veronika Stoykova.

Plot:

Richard, a small-time gangster is retiring. Before he can, he must take one last job: to steal money from a rival gangster’s house.

Miles apart, Melvin (David Rucker III) is a reluctant family man who has dreams of becoming a famous curator for his Museum of the Macabre. His newest acquisition? The remains of the notorious Masquerade, a vampire born from the embers of Hell itself, slain centuries ago.

On Halloween night, their paths will collide and they’ll be forced to work together to fight centuries-old evil with everything on the line…

Reviews [click links to read more]:

” …The Good Things Devils Do feels a bit disjointed and suffers from plot holes at times. But the film’s pace and frequent bouts of action kept them from being a serious distraction. On the other hand Masquerade’s Evil Dead style taunting got on my nerves after a while. But they’re minor complaints for an unheralded indie film with a solid plot…” Voices from the Balcony
